Johnny and Carol Bilouna, a Syrian refugee couple, became State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers within a month of arriving in Australia, and have since undergone training in land searches, floods, and bush-fires. Mrs. Bilouna said the volunteer work was a way of meeting people and giving something back. “It’s a way of saying thank you to the government” she said.
